Default Question

I posted this question on a Ford truck forum and all I got was "If you don't know what the term mentioned means, go with the 32s". I was asking how big a tire I could throw under my stock Ranger FX4 and was told I could squeeze 33s in if I "crank the front torsion bars". I don't know what that means so I asked and got the above response. Anyway, what does it mean to crack the front torsion bars? Thanks.

on the front suspention it is independent... it has upper and lower A arms with a large long rod from the A arm running back to the frame. When the suspenstion travels up and down it twists these rods.... the rods are the torsion bars. Now were the bars meet the frame there is a small bolt or nut that looks like some sort of adjustment. when you tighten it it twists the torsion bars thus pushing the front suspention down giving more clearance for the tires.

Only ajust what you need on this because to much will make it ride like crap cause you take the give out of the bar by doing this too much, its also a good ideal to get an alighment when your done so you dont get goofy ware on the new 33's

the ride goes to hell because you're applying the force on the torsion bars at the wrong angle when you turn them. Optimal angle for the torsion bars is just like the sway bar: horizontal or within 5-10 degrees, to utilize the lever-arm action. If you crank the bars, you're applying a greater fraction of that force lengthwise along the arm instead of perpendicular, so it eliminates whole idea of the torsion arm, pretty much turning a spring into a solid bar.

My Ranger rides a little rough as it is so I'll just leave the bars alone and wait till I can afford a lift. Thanks for the quick response.

another idea would be a body lift, there so simple to install, and drasticly cheeper that a suspention lift. Most kits come with all the trimmings like the fan shroud extender and some even come with a body gap filler. That way you dont see the gap between fram and body...
