I will have to say supercharging the 2.5 would give you mad bragging rights, but you have to remember, depending on the motor, it may not respond to supercharging like other motors. I'm supercharging a 3.0L OHV Vulcan (once i can find a good deal on a centrifugal supercharger) (also this is the same v6 found in earlier rangers prior to them switching to 4.0L SOHC Colognes) the Vulcan doesn't respond to much until you do some drastic modifications that increase compression. If you can get the Vulcan to 10:1 at least, it will respond well to supercharging. Stroking the Vulcan to 3.3L gives you a good bit more horses and is another way to get it to respond. The kits available through Tom Morena can take around 20lbs of boost, so that gives you a good bit to play with. In end, if you rebuild, stroke and mill the Vulcan you can turn that 140 horses to 250+ horses. (which is what I'm doing right now.)
I brought this up to make the point that, anything is possible. Although it may not be cost effective. In my case, Swapping motors isn't possible (its in a family sedan and takes way too much work I'm willing to do) So. new transmission in the car built to take 300 horses for about 1700, super charger kit 2500 and engine rebuild kit 3000 that sets me back about 7200 bucks. Am I willing? Yes. Why? Because it isnt cost effective otherwise to switch out the motor. Labor wise it REALLY isn't that "work effective" Could swap it? Yes. Do I want to? No.
It all depends on those factors. So DO what YOU want to DO. Just a suggestion from me is, a swap would be more cost effective, however, If you convert your 2.5 to a diesel... and turbo it... then.. that would be 100% pure awesome. (which is another Idea i've tossed around) |
Well its ultimately your rig build it how you like it is what I say. The SBC swap is VERY common and very well supported and documented... but I always think like every automotive project (I'm guilty too) its FAR UNDER ESTIMATED for instance... I have been debating the same problem.... to do it " right" Read between the lines clones... not hacked up like some robbie redneck high on meth and NOS sports drink....
and using new parts for optimum performance and reliabilty you get:
Aluminum Radiator by 4 Wheel Drive Hardware
Part #NOR205088 $499.99
Performance Diaphragm Clutch Cover and flywheel SBC
Part #MRG51-105 $256.99
AX5 Conversion Bellhousing by Advance Adapters
Part #ADV712565 $417.99
Chevy V8 Small Block Engine Mount by Advance Adapters
Part #ADV713090 $172.99 Subtotal: $1,347.96
plus you will need:
conversion headers from NoVak or similar about $245.00
Upgraded cooling fan (electric) about $150 at least
Factor in the cost a GOOD used engine (with an operable EFI fuel system, harness, and PCM) 1,500 at least
Plus misc. for custom fab exhaust work, AC hoses (if using AC) etc. $200
That gives you a total of $3242.96 if you get a good deal on a complete engine and that you use your exisiting AX5 Yea that will work REAL good!
So factor in a good 700r4 late model with the thrust bearings replaced with torringtons and a good Valvebody or NV3500/AX15 swap for $400 maybe.. gently used your at $3642.96
then you are at the cost of a blower or turbo kit... SOOOOO
Ultimately you need to do what you think is best. And yes of course I will be flooded with blasts and posts that you did your SBC or SBF swap in your JP with $900, a friend who had some teeth and a skoal ring in your pants pocket but you will fail to mention you stole the engine, used your junk trans you had in your kitchen and that it runs on 8 cylinders "most of the time"
Just kidding!
I am sure you can cut costs down on the swap by doing some hard investigative bone yard picking and some swapping of parts amongst friends but its your ride... pimp it how you may
I am for one have no clue whats right for you I just know there is alot of knowledge out there on the net and on here... lets know.

View My Jeep Specs | | | | So im curious, i have the 2.4L and after reading up on some things, the same motor is found in the PT cruiser. Would it essentially be plug'n play with the 220hp turbo motor install into my wrangler with minor modifications? And if the 42rle is the same auto tranny for the 4 popper and the 4.0L, the nv3500 should match right up to the 4cyl to handle the extra power right?
If thats the case, these motors arent very expensive at the junk yard and you would have more power than the stock 4.0L.
Feel free to correct me if im wrong

A 2.5 L AMC 150 Inline-4 motor was available on entry-level models until 2003 when the 2.4 L DOHC Neon 4-cylinder engine replaced it.

All 4 bangers before 2004 used the 2.5L AMC 150 OHV 8V I4
