Question 360 AMC engine swap

I have a 1987 YJ with 4.2 engine and auto tranny, I want to swap in a 1976 AMC 360, but not real sure about all of the wiring and what is there is kinda hacked up but maybe be saved unless there is a cheaper fix. Where can I get any info on this wiring?

You won't be using most of your wiring.
The 258 is computer controlled, and the 360 is far from it.
If you have most of the engine harness from the donor rig, you should be in business.

You could use the wiring with the 258's alternator, but you would be better off going with all the 360's accessories.

The 360 should just need a bare minimum of wiring compared to the 258.
(Mostly a 12v unswitched source, a 12v switched source when the key is in the start position, and a ballasted source (8-10v) when the key is in the run position.

Obviously a little more involved than that, but I need to get a starting point for what you have.

This will probably go back and forth 4 more times to get the info.

Shoot me a PM, and I'll see what I can do to sort it out..

on the 360, the switched source for the ignition is 9v, a ballast resistor of about 1.32 ohms ( at napa) is all you need

the 76 comes with AMC ill fated prestolite distributor..... you can swap a DUI (one wire distributor.... has internal coil) another ign upgrade is the ford duraspark

if you need to know more.... check

www.ifsja.org

and go to forum

the 360 is a huge heat generating plant....... you need mechanical fan..... a big gas tank.... most of the IFSJA guys are leaning toward EFI...... and a larger weight.....

the 76 has the TH400 that comes with the Quadra trac... and the long tailshaft..... trany thru TC, and offset to right differentials.... but you can swap a TF727..... off courses with TC to use.....

That's the hardest part. We did a similar swap in my brother's CYJ-7. But he blew out the old 401, so we put in the 360. We had to swap flywheels because they were weighted different. The 401 flywheel would've destroyed the 360 engine.

He had a buddy help him with wiring. Good Luck!

If you need some more help with this, go visit this site: Bulltear, Inc. Forums. It is a 4x4/AMC V-8 site. Lots of good information, lots of AMC V-8 upgrades. Lots of guys with Jeeps with 304, 360, and 401 AMC V-8s in their Jeeps.
