Default Diff. gears and rear axle in cherokee put into a Yj?would it work?

Hey My 89 YJ has the crappy 3.07 gears in it and i want something slightly better but dont have the money, cuz I dont have a job anymore and i dont have the money for new gears or a SYE, or a CV styel driveshaft, so im trying to work around the shortage of money. So would the gears out of the D30 and D35 of a Cherokee work and fit right in the D30 and D35 in my YJ??? And I know the rear driveshafts in the YJ are pretty short and when lifted up they get to be on a pretty crazy angle, so is the rear driveshaft in a cherokee the same length or is it bigger and longer then the YJ?? And if it is bigger and longer would it bolt right up in my YJ or would it need to be modified?? Im asking because im putting a 3-4inch lift on my YJ and i know the driveshafts are short. Thanks. any help would be great.

use a Tcase drop for the driveline bind, and unless you swap in YJ axles with lower geras into your YJ, nothing else will "bolt in". If you take just the gears(which will fit the D35, not D30 cause a YJ is HP.) you still have to have them set-up properly. And if you cant do gears your self, you still have to pay labor, and most shops wont do the job with gears brought in by you.

A good number of XJ's have a HP D30 up front, thors gears will work for you.

I have never tried to set up used gears, but I do remember hearing about some things that are diffrent, I just don't recall what they are

yes, but just grab the whole axle so you dont need to pull the gears and have them set-up. Remove axle from YJ with 4banger, and bolt them into your YJ.

Some times you can find the complete axles at "pull and save" parts places for $50 each, just watch for there specials.

And yes the 4 bangers do have 4.10's

I put a set of FORD 9" in my CJ5, trick is finding a set out of an old bronco. Fairly straight forward and indestructable, I ran 44X17.5X15's on this 350 powered pig, and never busted and axle, u joint, or tore up a differential, I did go through drive shafts until I built a set out of sch.40 S.S.

wow, there's a can o' worms we dont' wanna open. we'll leave jeff and his sheep alone.

89YJ, being in Canada, if you look around you might find a couple of 95 YJ's that will have a 44 rear. In canada (I remember from when I bought my first YJ) the 44 came as a rear axle, but only for that year. I don't remember what package (if it was specific) or how rare they are, but look for them, and IIRC they came w/ 4.10's, but I'm not quite positive on the gearing. Check it out though and good luck.
