View My Jeep Specs | | | | Im welding my gears! | | This jeep is my daily driver, i use it about 60% on the road and 40% off-road. I need more traction but don;t have the money for a locker and don;t want to waste that money on a locker for the crap dana 35. I am eventually goin to swap in an 8.8 so if it breaks, who cares. What do you guys think about me welding the gears in my rear end? Dangerous? Is this exceptable for street use? i know my tires will wear faster but i need traction. Anyone ever run something like this?? thanks alot guys i really appreciate it!

#2 | | Junior...Get in the car! | You will destroy the carrier in the first week of street driving. It puts a lot of stress on the carrier by the crosspin when you take turns and with the strength and size of a D35 carrier you will crack the carrier. There is too much traction on the street and the tires will both grab. Bad idea. My buddy even destoyed a 12 bolt within a few days after welding it up. |

#3 | | better grocery getter | than wouldn't a full locker like a Lock Right or an EZ Locker do the same thing? Welding the gears and locking them is essentially the same thing right? Or are you talking about the weld weakening the metal and causing a stress fracture? Reason I ask is because I was entertaining the same thought.
On another note, if welding them is a bad idea, you could use your welder access to change your forum name from soon 2 B sprung over to just plain sprungover

#5 | | Junior...Get in the car! | The thing is a EZ locker, lockright, a full Detroit all unlock on turns. You will hear a ratcheting sound on the turn and that is the locker "unlocking." Yes welding the gears up is like locking it, but you won't have the ability to unlock on turns. This puts a lot of stress on the crosspin area while turning on the street because both tires want to travel the same distance but aren't. That is where the tire chirp comes from. I have my spiders welded, but I run a 14 bolt that has a massive carrier, 4 spider and 2 side gears and a 4 shaft crosspin. A D35 only has 2 spiders, 2 sides and 1 single shaft crosspin. |

#9 | | Mall Crawler | If you did that you would need to take out extra life insurance when driving in the rain on the highway. |

#10 | | Rock Crawler | If you do not want to invest in lockers, let some air out of your tires. That is what some of the frugal guys on the trail do. Of course, you need an air tank, or some source of air to get aired back up. I do not know how much less traction than lockers this is, but some of the stock rigs seem to run the trails just as good as the jeeps with lockers.

#12 | | asleep at the wheel | Or you could try the gheto lock, push in your parking brake. It helps some, but only some. Just remember to release the break when your threw the tough section.
Airing down your tires provides a big boost of traction, is your not already trying this.

Damn Dave, I wish I knew about that parking brake trick. It would have saved me a fortune on lockers |

View My Jeep Specs | | | | It not that i don;t want to invest in lockers, just don;t want to put one in the 35. Ive never aired down my tires, will have to finally try it. How does the parking brake trick work, tricking the diff into sending power to the wheel with more traction???? Enlighten me please
