Default Jeep wont start help

ok have an 89 YJ with 4.2 and crappy 5 speed. When I got it it had carb issues. So I junked the tock stuff for a mastercraft 2100 and an HEI distributor swap. Started running great the only hang up was even with the electric choke unhooked it would not idle down at all. I worked on it some in my garage a week ago found the choke linkage itself binding up a little bit but had to stop working before I fixed it. Went out a couple days ago and tried to start it. after 2 10 second pulls on the starter my wife and I saw smoke from under the hood. She opens the hood and there is a fire. It was on the fire wall under the battery tray. Get it put out and look into the damage. Found a few fuseable links melted at what the book and advance auto calls the starter relay. Fixed the fuseable links and replaced the relay now the engine rotates fine and fires but immediately shuts right back off.

Im at a loss here. I took most of the emissions crap out with the carb and HEI swap so the book isnt a ton of help. Any ideas you all might have will help so lets hear it.

IIRC- could there be a Ford style starter solenoid something under or near the battery tray?

There are also two relays outboard of the battery...

We put on a new starter relay which is connected to the selenoid on the starter. And as for spark, we are checking it in a few. The jeep trys to start but it will not stay running.

Damn thing will still not start. Now I have stripped all wires that are not used. It tries but it does not seem to be getting spark. Can someone help me figure out why? I am LOST
