Default CJ transmission

I need help with a transmission question. I need to know if a T5 out of a 1984 Cherokee will fit in my 1983 CJ 7 that has a T4 trans in it. Does anybody know if a t-4 can be rebuilt to t-5 tranny?

In my opinion the T-4 is a stronger tranny than the T-5, which was built for use in cars, not trucks or Jeeps... I replaced my T-5 with a NV4500 after 2 rebuilds and running the Rubicon Trail with no 2nd gear. I'd save the money that a T-5 would cost, and spend it on the extra gas you use by having no
fifth gear, but that's just me.

most likely the cherokee had a v-6 or inline 6 and the input will be different.

For starters, welcome to J-O Crazy Horse.

It would help to know a little more about your CJ. What motor? What gears/tires? What do you do with the CJ? Is it a hard core wheeler, or just a street and light trail Jeep? It helps so we know how tough a tranny you need.

That being out of the way, the 84 Cherokee did not have a T4 or a T5 tranny in it. None of the XJ/MJ's came with the Borg Warner T Trannys.

1. 4 speed, Aisin Warner AX-4 (84-87 Mostly 4 cyl)
2. 5 speed, Peugeot BA-10 (87-89 Mostly 4.0 6cyl)
3. 5 speed, Aisin Warner AX-5 (84-94 Mostly 4 cyl)
4. 5 speed, Aisin Warner AX-15 (89-99 6 cyl)
5. 3 speed auto, Chrysler 904, 999 (84-91 optional, V6 & Mostly 4 cyl)
6. 4 speed auto, Aisin Warner AW30-40 (87-91 optional 6 cyl)

Those are your only trannys produced in the XJ/MJ line.

If you are not a heavy off roader, the T5 will do fine in your CJ. The added 5th gear does help out in the times of high dollar gas. The T4 is no stronger than the T5. It's the same tranny minus the 5th gear.

The Tremec T-176 is a decent tranny. Standard on some 6 cyl CJ's. It is still just a 4 speed, but stouter than the Borg Warner T4 and T5.

Question Tranny swap

OK, with that said, I have a 77' cj7, 304 with a T-150, preparing to replace it with a T-18 for the granny. An overdrive gear would be nice for many reasons of coures. I am a light off roader with mostly street/hi-way use and some possible/probable heavy crawling every so often because you never know whats around the next bend. I know nothing about other jeeps and trannys for swapping for fit. So, can swapping the bellhousing work on other manual 4/5-speeds, or will other 4/5-speed just bolt-up, or what other jeeps could be used for a swap? I live and very much enjoy Idaho's 10+k mountains and back country, just would like something more reliable/stronger/added MPG. It's atleast 100-250+ miles just to get anywhere. I have been happy with the T-150 most of the time, but if I'm going to do it, I just as well do it once. I also have around 4" lift, solid rear axles(D20), with 33x12.5's. Already twisted the rear drive line and replaced it with a custom made HD one. Having another driveline made is no problem if the tranny is shorter or longer. I just do not want to buy an overdrive unit as it is something else to fix later on and I would prefer not buying a engine/bellhousing adaptor, but will if I need to and the price is within reason. Maybe I should just start another post as I think others would be interested in the idea. O.K. Let me have it.

Ok, you have a T-150 3 speed tranny now, which is a good solid unit, built to handle a V-8. The T5 is a POS, straigt up. There are WAY better trannies to considder. Try looking for a T-176 /177 4 speed, or the bullet proof crawler gear T-18. But overall, I would recomend looking for a donor 177 with the exellent D300 TC. It's a good solid unit that will serve you well, and is an easy swap in.

I agree with coldwater, the T-5 is a POS. I'm no expert on what fits, but I would look into a NV3550 from a Dodge Dakota or Ram 1500. I'm not sure, but I think it would bolt right up, and it's lot stronger than a T-5.

I had the T-150, when I converted to SBC I installed the SM465 with the granny low gear and used a novak adapter to the Dana 20. I would recommend looking at the Novak website and study the different tranny possibilities available. Just about anything you use may require some drive shaft modification.

I have an 1984 Jeep Scrambler, with a ford 5.0 bolted to original Borg Warner T5. Need to replace the transmission. Can anyone tell me where to get a used T5 or is there another transmission that will bolt up or adapt with minor changes. also does anyone know where to find a new floor pan for scrambler. thanks lee
